Chapter One

“Alfred, are you sure this is a good idea?”

“What do you mean, ‘good idea’? What matters today is we prank as many people as we can!” Your American friend laughed. His loud, carefree laughter was obnoxious, but also rather adorable. “April first is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!”

“Alfred, April first is more of a once-in-a-year thing.”

“Ah, same thing, _____. Let’s go prank Iggy-brows,” Alfred suggested. “That old grump.”

“Remember last year?” you said, giggling, remembering the ridiculous costumes that Spain had gotten all the countries to get into through blackmail and various means.

“Ah...yeah, last year was... interesting,” Alfred said, slightly embarrassed. “C’mon, there’s Arthur’s house.”

“What are we doing?”

“Just a series of small pranks. Like the classic ones, that still get a laugh. I was busy last month, so I didn’t have much time to think up of pranks.”

“Okay. Just tell me what to do, and I’ll help!” you giggled. You and Arthur were good friends. Though he was often grumpy, you two enjoyed each other’s company. You were sure that you’d get a good laugh out of Arthur’s reactions to Alfred’s pranks.

“Alright, _____. First step: get him out of the house and find something for him to do for at least an hour. This is your most important job.”

“Got it, Captain America!” you answered playfully, saluting to your friend with a wink.

After taping over all of Arthur’s computer mice, taping giant plastic insects to the inside of his lamps, attaching an air horn to the bottom of all his office seats, painting over all his bars of soap with clear nail polish, and filling cups of water and turning them upside down on the table so the water would remain in the glass, and several others, you two walked out of Arthur’s house, happy that your preparation went unnoticed.
“Who are we pranking now?” you asked, getting into the spirit.

“How about... well, Ivan’s kinda scary, so how about Yao?” Alfred snickered. “That traditional old man doesn’t know what’s coming.”

“Yao?” You asked. You didn’t really know the Chinese country that well. You only saw him a few times at World Meetings. You didn’t think much of him, he was just sort of one of those people that were just there in your life. You had spoken a few times, but very briefly and usually about harmless topics like the weather.

“Yeah,” Alfred said, rummaging through the plastic bag of supplies you two had bought yesterday at some random stores. “Hey, I think we have enough stuff to do some more pranks. Okay, same routine as earlier... you distract and get him out of the house, and I’ll sneak inside first. Then you join me inside.”

“Okay,” you said.

Alfred hid behind a bush as you went up to Yao’s front door. His house was very elegant and traditional. Red and gold lanterns were hung up in the front, and beautiful Oriental designs were done on the columns that held up the curved roof of his house. You could hear the faint sound of water trickling and smelled the fragrance of flowers, and guessed that Yao probably had a garden. You knocked three times.
No one answered.

Frowning, you knocked several more times, before yelling into the door, “Is anyone home?!” No one answered, and you gave the door a light push. “Hello?” you said into the interior of the house, which stunned you.

Yao lived in a siheyuan, or a Chinese quadrangle. The house was rectangular, with an open courtyard inside. The second floor of the house was visible in the central courtyard, with a balcony running on all sides. There was fanciful latticework on Yao’s windows, and everything basically made your jaw drop. The house seemed to have layers, both across land and upwards, topped off with a curved roof and sandwiching trees inside. It was a lovely combination of house and nature, and you loved it.

“_____?” You heard Alfred’s voice.

“Oh, right! Alfred! Uh...no one’s home.”

“Alright, let’s get down to buis—whoa...” Alfred stood in the doorway, mesmerized by its traditional beauty just like you.

You two unintentionally began to wander around the house, and you wandered into a room with a computer, elegant wood desk, and organized shelves lining the walls. A lucky bamboo plant sat on the desk, and there were Chinese watercolor paintings on the open wall of the house. “The office...” you murmured, touching the computer. It came alive with the login window, requesting for an username and password.

Suddenly, you heard a new voice. “Why is my door open?”

“Shoot!” you said, instinctively ducking under the desk.

“Hm, maybe I left it open,” the voice said. You heard the door close and you let out a sigh of relief. You could sneak out when no one was looking and leave the house unnoticed. But suddenly, you stiffened as you saw a pair of shoes walk into the very room you were in.

Please leave quickly, please leave quickly, please don’t notice me... you thought, praying. Luckily for you, the person shelved a few books and departed the room. You scrambled out of your hiding spot and went for the door, but opened the door to a bathroom instead. Groaning, you realized that you were lost inside the house. You closed the door to the bathroom and turned around to see a pair of twinkling amber eyes.

“Gya! _____? Is that you? What are you doing in my house?” Yao questioned you.

“S-sorry!” you stammered, unsure of how you should respond. “U-uh, A-Alfred convinced me to do this stupid dare and I did it and I’m sorry I intruded!” By now, your cheeks had begun to flush with color at the embarassment of being caught.

“Okay, I see,” Yao said. “Would you like a cup of tea?”

“Er—what?”

Yao laughed. You noticed he was wearing a Chinese silk red and gold robe with long sleeves. The golden buttons at his neck were very elaborate and Oriental. You couldn’t help but notice the dragon designs stitched into the lining of his gold sleeves. Now that is a work of art, you thought to yourself. “Would you care to stay for a cup of tea?” Yao repeated.

“You—you’re not mad at me for trespassing?”

“Surprised, slightly worried, but no, not annoyed.” He smiled warmly at you, his honey-brown eyes staring into yours.

You bit your lip. Where the heck did Alfred go? Did he already leave? Did he—

“Yo, ____!”

Yao stiffened. “Who is that?”

You winced. “That’s... Alfred.”

Alfred came into view, entering from a random room near the end of the hallway. “Oh, hey, Yao... uh... this is awkward.”

Yao’s facial expression immediately became colder and annoyed at the sight of the American country. “You are so immature, aru,” he scolded Alfred. You flinched. Did Yao think the same way about you, just too polite to say it to your face?

“Hey, dude, I’m sorry!” Alfred said. “We were going to prank you, but we were too mesmerized by the awesomeness of this place. Say, where did you get that plum blossom tapestry in your room?”

Yao scowled. “Those tapestries are generations old. I wouldn’t touch them if I were you.”

“Okay, jeez! Sorry.”

“Um, Yao...” you said, feeling incredibly awkward. “Maybe Alfred and I should leave now? We’re really sorry, we shouldn’t have come in here without your permission.”

You weren’t sure if you imagined it, but Yao’s gaze seemed to soften as he turned towards you. “_____, are you busy? I suppose I was inconsiderate, then. You must have a busy schedule. Perhaps we could talk some other time.”

W-what?

“Wait, did you two have some plans that I don’t know about?” Alfred asked. You didn’t like the way he emphasized the word “plans.”

“N-no,” you responded too quickly. You weren’t sure why, but your cheeks began to grow warm again. “Y-Yao just asked me to stay for a cup of tea.”

“Oh. Yeah, we’ll be leaving. Sorry, old man!” Alfred said as he pulled on your arm and ran out of the house, laughing obnoxiously as you two exited the house.

“That was a... a really pretty house...” you said to yourself quietly.
